Transfer Students Requirements and Course Listings

See the Community College Transfer Guide for information on Transferable Virginia Community College and Richard Bland College Courses. It includes information on transfer statistics, general education requirements, and links to requirements and course listings in PDF format. (You must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader software to open and read this document.) The site also allows you to search for your Virginia Community College or Richard Bland College Courses to determine if they will transfer to Radford University, or to search the Radford University courses to determine which classes you need to take at the Virginia Community Colleges or Richard Bland College for transfer credit to RU.

Transfer Credit Policy

There is no limit to the number of hours a student may transfer. One quarter of the semester hours required for a degree must be taken at RU. Half of the required major courses must be taken at RU. All students must be enrolled at Radford during the last semester before graduation. Forty percent of the degree must include 300/400 level courses. A minimum C cumulative grade point average (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) on all coursework attempted is required for consideration.

Evaluation of transcripts for acceptance of transfer credits is done by RU's Admissions Office upon admission. An official credit evaluation will show courses and credits that are accepted and fulfill RU requirements. Grades do not transfer to RU, only credit hours.

Credits are usually accepted from institutions accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency, provided that they carry a grade of "C" or better. Radford does not give transfer credit for professional education courses completed at two-year colleges.

Students who have earned an associate's degree from a Virginia Community College based on a baccalaureate-oriented sequence of courses will be granted junior status and will have satisfied RU's general education requirements. This includes the associate of arts, associate in sciences and the associate in arts and sciences degrees. Departmental general education requirements must also be met. Community college students completing the "Transfer Module" will receive credit toward partial completion of RU's general education requirements.

If you are enrolled at another college at the time of acceptance, your final evaluation cannot be made until the complete official transcript is received.

If you have completed fewer than 30 semester hours of college level coursework, your high school transcripts and standardized test results will be considered along with your college course work. In high school you should have completed 21 units of work. Most successful applicants have taken:

  • 4 units of English
  • 4 units of college preparatory math
  • 4 units in laboratory sciences
  • 4 units in social studies, including American history
  • 4 units in foreign language.

If you have any questions concerning the transfer of credits, contact the Admissions Office at (540) 831-5371, or via e-mail at ruadmiss@radford.edu

Application Process -- New Applicants

  1. You can apply on-line or complete and submit a paper application. Each requires a $50 non-refundable application fee. Use our online form to request an application, or download and print an application from our website.
  2. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.
  3. If you have completed fewer than 30 semester hours of college level coursework or if you have not completed a college level math course, have your high school transcript and your Scholastic Assessment Test I (SAT I) results sent to the RU Office of Admissions. RU accepts the American College Testing Program (ACT) in place of the SAT I.

* Transfer applicants must have a minimum C (2.0) cumulative GPA on all work attempted to be considered for admission.  Students must also have completed a college level math course or the high school equivalent (Algebra I, II, and Geometry).

The Application Process - Previous Applicants

  1. Students who have submitted an application to RU within the past three years must complete and submit a reactivation form to be reconsidered for admission.
  2. Submit any additional transcripts of work completed since submission of the original application.

The Application Process - Applicants Who Have Previously Attended RU

  1. Complete and submit the request for readmission. To learn more about the readmission process and criteria, visit the Registrar’s Office.

Class Standing

A student's class standing is determined at the beginning of each semester and will not be changed during that semester.

Freshman - 0-25 semester hours
Sophomore - 26-55 semester hours
Junior - 56-85 semester hours
Senior - 86 and above

A minimum of 120 semester hours must be completed to earn a degree.

The Selection Process

The priority deadline for transfer students applying for the fall semester is June 1.  Applications are received on a rolling basis. Decisions are sent within 4-6 weeks after the application becomes complete. The priority deadline for transfer students applying for the spring semester is November 1.

If you wish to compete for scholarships, have your complete application package in the Office of Admissions by March 15 for the fall semester.

While admission to Radford is selective, decisions are based on a number of factors. The committee is interested in what makes you "you" - the unique combination of skills, interests and motivation that will enable you to be successful at Radford and in the world beyond. Please feel free to include personal comments and recommendations.

Transfer applicants will be considered on the basis of previous college performance and courses taken. Pre-nursing students are strongly advised to complete units in biology and chemistry. RU uses the College Board Advanced Placement Tests and the College Level Examination Program to award graduation credits.
