The Selection Process

Deadlines -- Applications are received on a rolling basis with two primary deadlines for completion (December 1 and February 1).  Notification dates will depend upon the date the application becomes complete in the Admissions Office. Students who wish to compete for RU merit scholarships must submit a complete application by January 15th. Applicants who apply by the Early Action date of December 1st will be notified of the admissions decision by January 15 and those who apply by the Regular Decision date of February 1 will be notified by April 1. Students who do not meet the February 1st date may still apply to the University until April 1st. However, these applications will be considered if space is available and decisions will be mailed on a rolling notification basis.

Decision Factors -- While admission to Radford is selective, decisions are based on a number of factors. The committee is interested in what makes you you -- the unique combination of skills, interests and motivation that will enable you to be successful at Radford and in the world beyond. Please feel free to include personal comments and recommendations. Students are selected on the basis of:

  • High school record (including course of study, grade point average and class rank)
  • Results of the SAT I or ACT
  • Involvement in extracurricular and community activities

Recommended High School Courses -- As an incoming freshman, you should have completed a broad selection of coursework in high school. Most successful applicants have taken:

  • 4 units of English
  • 4 units of college preparatory math
  • 4 units of laboratory sciences
  • 4 units in social studies
  • 3-4 units in foreign language

Virginia residents are encouraged to complete the Advanced Studies Diploma. Pre-nursing students are strongly advised to complete units in biology and chemistry. If you are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses, plan to take the AP test in May of your senior year. RU uses the College Board Advanced Placement Tests, the International Baccalaureate Examinations and the College Level Examination Program to award graduation credits.

Important Note Regarding Math --  Beginning with students applying as freshmen for the fall of 2003, Radford University requires a minimum of three years of college preparatory math. These courses must include Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
